In order to maintain good braking efficiency, there should be an optimal clearance between the brake shoe and the brake drum. With the wear of the friction lining, the gap between the brake shoe and the brake drum increases, and a mechanism for adjusting the gap is needed. In the past, the clearance of drum brake needed to be adjusted manually, and the clearance was adjusted with a feeler gauge.
When the clearance increases and the brake shoe pushes out beyond a certain range, the clearance adjusting mechanism will pull the adjusting lever "pawl" to the position where it engages with the next tooth of the adjusting tooth, thus increasing the length of the connecting rod, displacing the brake shoe position and restoring the normal clearance.
Clearance adjustment of drum brake is realized by connecting rod system between camshaft and brake air chamber-brake arm. There is a worm wheel and a worm pair in the brake arm. By adjusting the worm to rotate the worm wheel to drive the cam to rotate, the redundant clearance between friction pairs is eliminated.
The brake bottom plate is the installation base of all parts of the brake except the brake drum, and the correct position of each installation part should be ensured. The brake bottom plate bears the braking reaction torque when the brake works, so it should have enough rigidity. Insufficient stiffness will reduce the braking torque, increase the pedal stroke and make the lining wear uneven.
