Compressed air produced by a compressor and kept in a reservoir is used by pneumatic brakes, also known as air brakes or compressed air brakes. When the operator actuates the lever or pedal, a valve allows the compressed air to flow to a piston that engages the brake. A spring disengages the brake when the pressure is released.
