Learn how electro-hydraulic drum brakes work.

Apr 12, 2024

The electro-hydraulic drum brake is an important braking device that uses an electro-hydraulic pusher as a brake opening drive device. The working principle of this kind of brake is relatively complicated, as follows:
First, the electrical system provides the electrical energy required by the drum brakes. Electric energy is transmitted to the controller through wires, and the controller controls the start, stop, and strength of the brake according to the user's instructions.
Secondly, the hydraulic system is the key to achieving the braking effect. The hydraulic system consists of oil pump, oil tank, oil pipe, oil cylinder and hydraulic pipeline. When the controller issues a braking command, the oil pump will extract the hydraulic oil from the oil tank and transport it to the oil cylinder through the oil pipe. The piston in the cylinder will move accordingly, which will put a certain amount of pressure on the brake shoes on the brake drum, thereby achieving the braking effect.
In the braking process, the brake wheel plays a key role as a braking couple. When the braking command is issued, the compression spring will release elastic potential energy and push the lever mechanism, causing the two symmetrically arranged brake pads to radially hold the brake wheel tightly to generate braking torque. This braking torque can effectively slow down or stop a mechanism or machine, and is sometimes used to adjust or limit its movement speed.
When the braking command is released, the hydraulic system will automatically recover hydraulic oil into the tank, the piston will return to its original position, and the contact force between the brake shoes and the brake drum will gradually decrease until it is completely released.
The electro-hydraulic drum brake has a compact structure, stable braking, safety and reliability, high operating frequency, and uniform force on the brake and brake couple. It is widely used to brake the stationary and running parts of various lifting, transportation, water conservancy, chemical machinery and light industrial machinery to play a safety protection role.
It should be noted that the specific operation methods may vary depending on different equipment and applications. Therefore, in actual use, it is recommended to refer to the equipment manual or the guidance of professionals for operation. At the same time, in order to ensure the normal operation of the brake and extend its service life, regular maintenance and inspection are required to ensure that it is in good working condition.
