The MWZ160-80 is a medium-duty industrial electromagnetic drum brake belonging to the MW(Z) series (MW for basic type, MWZ for enhanced dustproof/waterproof type), engineered for reliable deceleration, emergency stopping, and static load holding of small-to-medium rotating machinery. Classified as a fail-safe, spring-engaged, electromagnetic released normally closed brake, it features a compact modular design, adjustable braking torque, and improved environmental adaptability-optimized for general industrial scenarios with intermittent or continuous operation. The model designation (MWZ160-80) clarifies its core parameters: "MWZ" for enhanced electromagnetic drum brake series, "160" for brake drum diameter (160 mm), and "80" for nominal braking torque (80 N·m). Widely used in light hoisting, conveying, and general machinery, it ensures safe operation under loads of 100–500 tons and working conditions (dust, normal temperature, and moderate vibration). Below is a detailed breakdown of its core attributes, working principle, key features, typical applications, and technical specifications:
1. Model Interpretation & Core Function
The MWZ160-80's model code directly reflects its series classification, key parameters, and structural advantages for quick equipment matching:
| Model Segment | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MWZ | Enhanced Electromagnetic Drum Brake Series (MW = basic electromagnetic drum brake; Z = "Zengqiang" (enhanced) for dustproof/waterproof performance) |
| 160 | Brake drum diameter: 160 mm (medium-sized specification for medium-duty loads) |
| 80 | Nominal braking torque: 80 N·m (adapted to small-to-medium rotating machinery) |
Its core functions target safety and practicality for general industrial braking needs:
Stable Braking: Delivers consistent 80 N·m torque to decelerate or stop machinery smoothly, avoiding inertial shock to equipment and workpieces.
Fail-Safe Protection: Automatically engages via spring force in power loss, electromagnetic coil failure, or emergency shutdown-preventing machinery runaway.
Static Load Holding: Secures light-to-medium loads during downtime, maintenance, or power outages, eliminating accidental movement.
Enhanced Environmental Adaptability: MWZ's dustproof/waterproof design ensures reliable operation in dusty or moderately humid environments.
2. Working Principle
The MWZ160-80 operates on a fail-safe principle (spring force for braking, electromagnetic force for release), with simple and efficient force transmission. Its working cycle includes three key states:
2.1 Brake Engagement (Default Safety State)
When the machinery is stationary, powered off, or in emergency mode, the electromagnetic coil is de-energized (no electromagnetic attraction).
Internal high-tension compression springs (65Mn steel) expand outward, pushing the two arc-shaped brake shoes to swing outward. The friction linings on the shoes clamp tightly against the inner wall of the 160 mm diameter brake drum.
Friction between the linings and drum generates 80 N·m of stable braking torque, stopping the connected machinery shaft or holding it stationary.
2.2 Brake Release (Operating State)
When the machinery needs to run, the electromagnetic coil (single-phase AC, common voltage: 220V/380V) is energized, generating strong electromagnetic attraction.
The electromagnetic force pulls the armature and linkage mechanism, overcoming the spring force to retract the brake shoes inward. A precise 0.4–0.6 mm clearance is created between the friction linings and drum.
The brake drum rotates freely with the machinery shaft, enabling normal operation (e.g., winch lifting, conveyor movement) without drag friction.
2.3 Emergency Response (Fault State)
In case of power loss, electromagnetic coil damage, or emergency shutdown signals, the coil's electromagnetic force dissipates instantly.
The compression springs rebound within ≤0.25 seconds, driving the brake shoes to re-clamp the drum-engaging full braking torque to stop the machinery quickly and eliminate safety hazards.
