TYWZ2 Series foot operated hydraulic drum brake

Oct 23, 2025

The TYWZ2 Series is an upgraded range of industrial-grade foot-operated hydraulic drum brakes, engineered for enhanced control and durability in medium-to-heavy duty machinery-including forklifts, small cranes, winches, construction equipment, and material handling vehicles. Building on the TYW Series design, the TYWZ2 (with "Z2" indicating a second-generation upgrade) features improved hydraulic efficiency, higher torque output, and reinforced components to handle more demanding applications (5–20 tons). Its core design combines foot-pedal actuation (mechanical input converted to hydraulic force) with a robust drum-style braking structure, prioritizing operator control, safety, and reliability in harsh industrial environments. Below is a detailed breakdown of its features, working principle, advantages, applications, and specifications:

1. Series Overview & Core Function

The TYWZ2 Series retains the "TYW" foundation (T = Foot, Y = Hydraulic, W = Drum) with upgrades for heavier loads and more intensive use. Its core functions include:

Precision Manual Braking: Allowing operators to modulate deceleration or execute sudden stops via foot pressure, critical for tasks like load positioning (e.g., crane hoists) or navigating uneven terrain (e.g., construction forklifts).

Secure Load Holding: Maintaining static loads when the pedal is locked, even under extended periods (e.g., suspending materials mid-air or parking on inclines).

Redundant Safety Braking: Serving as a backup system for automated brakes, ensuring operation continues safely if primary systems fail.

With drum diameters from 200–500mm and torque outputs from 300–5,000 N·m, the series targets medium-to-heavy duty applications requiring human-in-the-loop control.

2. Working Principle

The TYWZ2 Series operates on an enhanced hydraulic amplification principle, refining the original design for higher pressure and smoother response:

2.1 1. Brake Release (Normal Operation)

When the foot pedal is not engaged, internal return springs retract the brake shoes, creating a 0.3–0.5mm gap between the shoes and rotating drum.

The drum (connected to the machinery's drive shaft) rotates freely, enabling equipment movement (e.g., a forklift traveling, a winch lifting).

2.2 2. Brake Engagement (Controlled Stopping/Holding)

Controlled Stopping: Depressing the foot pedal activates a high-efficiency hydraulic pump (integrated into the pedal assembly). This pump generates increased hydraulic pressure (8–20 MPa) compared to the previous generation, transmitted via reinforced hoses to the brake's hydraulic cylinder.

The pressurized cylinder pushes dual brake shoes against the drum. Friction between the linings and drum generates braking torque, with force directly proportional to pedal pressure-allowing smooth, adjustable deceleration.

Static Holding: A robust pedal lock (lever or ratchet mechanism) secures the pedal in the depressed position, maintaining hydraulic pressure to hold the load without continuous operator effort.

2.3 3. Emergency Braking

In critical situations, maximum pedal pressure triggers peak hydraulic output, driving the shoes against the drum with full-rated torque. This stops the machinery within ≤ 1.2 seconds (under rated load), preventing accidents or load drops.
