The MWZ160-80 is a medium-duty industrial electromagnetic drum brake belonging to the MW(Z) series (MW for basic type, MWZ for enhanced dustproof/waterproof type), engineered for reliable deceleration, emergency stopping, and static load holding of small-to-medium rotating machinery. Classified as a fail-safe, spring-engaged, electromagnetic released normally closed brake, it features a compact modular design, adjustable braking torque, and improved environmental adaptability-optimized for general industrial scenarios with intermittent or continuous operation. It is compact, adjustable, and adaptable to general industrial environments, with core working principles and applications as follows:
1. Working Principle
The brake operates through the coordination of an electromagnetic coil and compression springs, adhering to a fail-safe logic that prioritizes braking in faults. Key processes include:
1.1 Brake Engagement (Default Safety State)
When the equipment is powered off, stationary, or in emergency mode, the electromagnetic coil is de-energized (no electromagnetic force).
Internal 65Mn steel compression springs expand outward, pushing two arc-shaped brake shoes to swing outward. The resin-asbestos friction linings on the shoes clamp tightly against the inner wall of the 160 mm diameter brake drum.
Friction between the linings and drum generates 80 N·m (adjustable 60–100 N·m) braking torque, quickly absorbing the inertia of the rotating mechanism to decelerate or stop the equipment, and holding loads stationary to prevent accidental movement.
1.2 Brake Release (Operating State)
When the equipment needs to run, the single-phase AC electromagnetic coil (220V/380V) is energized, producing strong electromagnetic attraction.
The electromagnetic force pulls the armature and linkage mechanism, overcoming the spring force to retract the brake shoes inward. A precise 0.4–0.6 mm clearance is formed between the linings and drum.
The brake drum rotates freely with the equipment shaft, allowing the transmission mechanism to operate normally without drag friction.
1.3 Emergency Response (Fault State)
In case of power loss, coil damage, or emergency shutdown signals, the electromagnetic force dissipates instantly.
The compression springs rebound within ≤0.25 seconds, driving the brake shoes to re-clamp the drum-engaging full braking torque to stop the equipment rapidly and eliminate safety hazards.
