MW(Z) Series Electromagnetic Drum Brake - MWZ160-80

 

 

The MWZ160-80 is a medium-duty brake from the MW(Z) series (MWZ denotes the enhanced dustproof/waterproof variant), featuring a normally closed, fail-safe design with spring-engaged braking and electromagnetic release. It is compact, adjustable, and adaptable to general industrial environments, with core working principles and applications as follows:

1. Working Principle

The brake operates through the coordination of an electromagnetic coil and compression springs, adhering to a fail-safe logic that prioritizes braking in faults. Key processes include:

1.1 Brake Engagement (Default Safety State)

When the equipment is powered off, stationary, or in emergency mode, the electromagnetic coil is de-energized (no electromagnetic force).

Internal 65Mn steel compression springs expand outward, pushing two arc-shaped brake shoes to swing outward. The resin-asbestos friction linings on the shoes clamp tightly against the inner wall of the 160 mm diameter brake drum.

Friction between the linings and drum generates 80 N·m (adjustable 60–100 N·m) braking torque, quickly absorbing the inertia of the rotating mechanism to decelerate or stop the equipment, and holding loads stationary to prevent accidental movement.

1.2 Brake Release (Operating State)

When the equipment needs to run, the single-phase AC electromagnetic coil (220V/380V) is energized, producing strong electromagnetic attraction.

The electromagnetic force pulls the armature and linkage mechanism, overcoming the spring force to retract the brake shoes inward. A precise 0.4–0.6 mm clearance is formed between the linings and drum.

The brake drum rotates freely with the equipment shaft, allowing the transmission mechanism to operate normally without drag friction.

1.3 Emergency Response (Fault State)

In case of power loss, coil damage, or emergency shutdown signals, the electromagnetic force dissipates instantly.

The compression springs rebound within ≤0.25 seconds, driving the brake shoes to re-clamp the drum-engaging full braking torque to stop the equipment rapidly and eliminate safety hazards.

Key Design Support

A screw-type clearance adjuster compensates for lining wear, maintaining stable braking performance.

The MWZ series' epoxy-encapsulated coil and IP54 dustproof/waterproof cover ensure reliability in dusty/humid environments.

The MWZ160-80 is suitable for small-to-medium rotating machinery (100–500 ton loads) requiring compact, low-maintenance braking, with core applications in:

Light Belt Conveyors (bandwidth 400–600 mm): Applied in food processing, packaging lines, and small-scale material handling-enabling smooth start-stop and avoiding material spillage.

Roller Conveyors: Light-to-medium duty roller conveyors in assembly lines and logistics centers-supporting segmental braking to prevent workpiece collisions.

Machine Tool Auxiliaries: Auxiliary transmission mechanisms of lathes, milling machines, and grinders-providing quick braking to ensure processing precision and operator safety.

Small Fans & Pumps: Ventilation fans, water pumps, and air compressors-reducing inertial rotation time during shutdown and protecting equipment.

2.4 Construction & Agricultural Machinery

Small Construction Hoists: Material lifts and auxiliary hoists on construction sites-relying on power-off braking to ensure safe vertical transportation.
